Congratulations Mom and Pop

Congratulations Mom and Pop, whoever you are. March 29 is Mom and Pop Business Owners Day but just because they may be small, that doesn’t mean they have to take a back PEOPO026seat to anyone. See this article on the Small Business Administration Blog for “4 Ways Mom and Pop Businesses Can Outshine Their Bigger Competitors.”

Where did the holiday originate? According to Rick Segal,  “This holiday was created to honor the business that my parents started on 3/29/39 in Everett , MA —a hat shop called Ruth’s. It later developed into a woman’s specialty clothing store and moved to Medford , MA , increasing in size to 10,000 square feet with over $2 million dollars revenue until it closed in 1997.”

How do you celebrate the holiday? By spending money of course, but not just anywhere. Shop at a local Mom and Pop business near you. You can also use social media like sharing this blog or writing a thank you note.

Finally, here is a post by a small business about small businesses. The take away is that “…. to survive, we have to be trustworthy, fair, and provide that “personal touch.”
